Dogs days of Summer [Thank you Global Warming]
It’s unreasonably hot for Sept 25th. I know it’s not necessarily indicative of global warming, but we are facing the problems right now, it’s affecting our storms and conditions, and I’m going to attribute this 85 degree day to that problem which we all face.
And my volunteering this month has dog shit to do with that. (ag-ha)
I volunteered a couple of hours dog walking for a Williamsburg no-kill shelter [http://www.barcshelter.org/] It was amazing. I got this cutest 2-ish month old pup, who was just perfect. He was great on the short leash, no barking, barely any leading, a little hyper at first but calmed down. Also just a beautiful dog. Mostly white with a couple of orange brow spots, particularly on his face. Looked like a mutt. Something pitbull? And something big. At 2 months he was already 30-35 pounds. A good dog.
Multiple comments and lots of other dog owners informed me he would not last at the shelter long and I would be forced to agree although I selfishly want to keep showing up at volunteering and seeing him.
[Side note. Believe, soooo tempted to work towards adopting but it’s highly unfair to the dog because I work too much. Also like NYC Apt. Money. Just a lot of reason not to. But his little doggie face just screamed yes and I almost surrendered.]
I’m going to be a crazy dog person. I loved walking him and seeing him explore and being just a good boy. I liked being a dog walker, cuz you get to explore the city in a weird and unique pacing. And other people love dogs. It’s overall such a great experience, I have little doubt I will own at least one in the future.
The shelter was cool. Cats and dogs. Nice volunteers.
I also took the ferry for the first time and learned a little bit about that transit system. It’s great way to travel around the shores, and it’s very conveniently got a port in Dumbo.
Anyway, sort of a throw away event. I’ve covered a great gauntlet so far this year, food services, kids, farming, etc. It was fun to see different parts of the city, cool to meet different people from all different backgrounds, helped me break down misconceptions. I figured I’m allowed to work at a, perhaps less helpful, but more fun, event. I can additionally mitigate because I happened to donate for Joey Bada$$ and Pro Era for their Storms of Support event, just passing by on Friday the Brooklyn City Hall building while it was being held. Gave two big packages of toilet paper. Met some nice people involved in the work. Just super cool event, really nice of Joey to represent with Brooklyn love. Great collection of political and rap group doing good. Super awesome to contribute. Also just hilarious to see this hardcore rap group throwing down in City Hall. Iconic and amazing. Would love to be involved more. I chatted briefly with some organizers, and I’m very interested in learning more.
That’s all for now. I want to hit the Farm next month for their last event of the year. I’d also want to see Red Hook because of those food trucks. Hopefully they won’t be the same day. I might just hit Red Hook for a day myself, go Trucks into Pok Pok, do some writing and whatever, but who knows.
